About us
About the Club
Although field hockey during the last two decades has dramatically grown in popularity in Northern Virginia, a club team has never been developed in Alexandria, VA. Field hockey players fill high school rosters across the city, and–in the past–if they pursued developing their skills with club teams, they have had to travel beyond the city’s limits to other areas in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland. There have been many outstanding athletes from Alexandria who have continued their field hockey careers after high school in collegiate Division I, II, and III programs.
Recognizing the wide appeal and love of the sport among Alexandria residents, with a desire to keep young girls involved in team sports, AVA Magic was formed, led by one of the most decorated field hockey players in Alexandria, Philomena Fitzgerald. What makes AVA Magic Field Hockey Club truly special is the dynamic father-and-daughter team behind it, who are passionate about promoting the sport and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for all players.

OWNER AND CO-FOUNDER
In the spring of 2022, Alex and Philomena decided to take matters in their own hands and launched AVA Magic, the first and only youth field hockey club based in Alexandria, Virginia ("AVA").
Alex is a first-generation native of Los Angeles, CA but has been a resident of Alexandria for over twenty years. He is an Associate Professor of English at Northern Virginia Community College's Alexandria campus and has taught English college composition and literature courses for two decades.
Alex's passion extends beyond higher education and the classroom. He has a deep appreciation and respect for not only the power of words, but also the importance of community and the rich cultures, traditions, and histories that help define Los Angeles and Alexandria. He hopes to add to Alexandria's traditions by helping introduce and build the love of field hockey in the city, sharing the incredible impact it has had on not only his eldest daughter but his family as well.
A father of five children and a sports enthusiast, he believes in the transformative power of athletics and team sports. He is dedicated to provide a safe and supportive environment for young athletes, especially in the Alexandria community, where they can learn and foster values such as teamwork, confidence, and friendship
